Ghosting

This happens when a “ghost” of the non-printed area appears in a solid area. The distance between the “ghost” and the non-printed area corresponds to the diameter of the form roller, and what happens is that the ink not being used on the non-printed area is released at the next turn of the form roller. This is typically more visible in dark colors.

Problem:

Form roller with low pressure.

Solution:

Reset standard pressures.

Bad parallelism of the form roller.

Solution:

Reset roller position.

Form rollers are too large.

Solution:

Change blankets, check plate register.

Form rollers are inefficient.

Solution:

Install a third form roller (anti-ghosting roller).

Problem:

Low ink film weight.

Solution:

Reduce ink viscosity; increase flow.

Bad ink transfer.

Solution:

Add clear ink or flow promoter.

Problem:

Ink is too strong.

Solution:

Rematch the ink against a standard.
