Feathering and Bleeding

Feathering refers to small lines in the same direction that go from the color image area to the non-image area. Bleeding is when the ink causes image blurring in all directions.

Feathering

Problem:

Ink film weight is too high.

Solution:

Check the ink film weight against a standard.

The inker unit is not properly adjusted.

Solution:

Check and adjust pressures.

Problem:

Poor register.

Solution:

Reset and adjust the register.

Problem:

Ink viscosity is too low.

Solution:

Remove extra solvent from the formula.

Bleeding

Problem:

Ink film weight is too high.

Solution:

Check the film weight against a standard.

Problem:

The varnish film weight is too high (overlap).

Solution:

Reduce the varnish film weight.

Problem:

Dye content too high.

Solution:

Change the ink.
